MOM gluten free Prahran

Market on Malvern (MOM) is based on a food as medicine concept, where the food is designed to nourish your body.   This Prahran cafe is nearly entirely gluten free, with only oats used in a couple of breakfast items and they are currently undergoing assessment for Coeliac Australia accreditation.

MOM cafe is a place where dietary and digestive needs are not only understood, but are at the forefront of the menu design which is created by their team of dietitians, naturopaths and chefs.   Eating out can be difficult with dietary requirements and some of the trickier ones, such as low FODMAP and yeast free, are catered for here.  If you have other specific requirements (e.g. GAPS) meals can be adjusted as necessary. A lot of care is taken in the preparation of the meals and even filtered water is used for all cooking.

These options are marked on the menu:

gf (gluten free) df (dairy free) vg (vegan) yf (yeast free) v (vegetarian) p (paleo) fod (fodmap)

The wide variety of options caters for different food preferences or tastes in your family or friend group.  Importantly, there has been no sacrifice in taste!  There are also two kid friendly meals on the menu, both of which are gluten free and dairy free.

The gluten free food

My lunch date and I (both coeliacs) found it hard to choose as there were so many delicious sounding options, including the all day breakfast (the red velvet pancakes were particularly hard to resist!).

I was very happy with my choice of vegetable green curry, with added chicken.  It was a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach – it was fragrant and creamy (but dairy free) and you can see from the picture that it was a generous serving size with a great variety of nutritious vegetables.

My lunch date chose the roast chicken bagel with kale pesto, raw slaw and creamy cider dressing and all these flavours combined made for a delicious lunch. The bagels are from Pure Gluten Free Bakery, which happen to be my favourite gluten free bagels.

The drinks

I love fresh juice and the juices are cold pressed each day. There is a great variety of drinks, including smoothies (fodmap friendly), coffee and teas, kombucha and more.

The cafe had a steady stream of customers on the day I visited but the environment is quiet and relaxing, with mostly tables of two.  There is a courtyard space at the rear of the building which would be an ideal spot for a larger group or to relax on a warm day. You can also pop in to take-away coffee and cake, or a pre-prepared meal for your dinner at home.

The cafe was founded by Dr Anthony Yeuong, who owns the Beingwell Healthcare Clinic in the same building and staff are available to answer health questions and discuss your needs.

We could not fault the food and would highly recommend you put MOM onto your ‘must visit’ list.  I’m already planning my next visit to try those red velvet pancakes!

Disclosure:  My meal was ‘on the house’ but this has in no way influenced my review.
