MCG gluten free – Members’ Dining Room

I recently had the opportunity through an MCG member to dine at The Melbourne Cricket Ground Members’ Dining Room.  This is a an a la carte dining experience with full view of the ground so you can watch the game while eating your meal.

I was presented with a ‘dietary menu’ which does not use any peanuts, milk/dairy, gluten, fructose, tree nuts, sesame, fish/seafood in any dishes, however it does have a disclaimer that there is no guarantee allergens are not present.  There was a lot less choice than on the normal menu, with just three options for both the entree and main.

I chose the chicken and garden vegetable terrine ($24) which was tasty with the condiments it came with. I probably would have preferred the pumpkin suppli which is a bit like an arancini, but didn’t want to make a fuss asking about separate fryers etc.  I knew from another friend that the chips weren’t gluten free, so I thought the risk of cross contamination was probably high. The main course was spatchcock chicken ($40) which was a lovely meal on a cold wintery day.

The two dessert options didn’t really appeal, so I asked for a cheese plate which came with gluten free crackers.  As one of the cheeses was blue, I asked for extra cheddar and it was a huge serve!

The meals are expensive at the Members’ Dining Room but it is a really nice way to experience the MCG if you or a friend have membership.  On the day of our visit it was a wet and windy winter’s day, so it was amazing to watch the game feeling well fed and warm. They have two arrival times to stagger the demand on the kitchen but you have your table for the entire game.

For MCG gluten free as a normal ticket holder, you don’t have to miss out as The Food Store stocks Heaven’s Bakehouse gluten free pies (baked in the wrapper). They can also apparently do chips without the chicken salt (which is not gluten free).
